Each year, FIRST releases a new game. Every robotics team has only 6 weeks to brainstorm, design, build and test their robotic "athlete" to play the game. Here are the rules to year 2010's game.
Breakaway - 2010 FIRST Robotics Competition
Object of the game - To score soccer balls into goals in the corner of the field, crossing 1 foot high bumps. At the end, robots attempt to lift themselves off of the ground on a pipe in the center of the field.
Playing field - Carpeted floor with 2 1'x3' angled bumps
horizontally across the field, with towers in the center.
Robot wheels - Any kind of wheel is allowed
Goals - Nets in all 4 corners of the field.
Playing pieces - Soccer Balls
Scoring -
Ball in Goal- 1 Point
Hanging Robot On Pole- 2 Points
Hanging Robot On Other Hanging Robot- 3 Points
2010 Robot Design
For the 2010 game Breakaway our robot is able to kick soccer balls with a mechanical arm, from the farthest point on the field. A pair of rollers capture the ball and hold it in place without lifting it off the ground, which would be a penalty. At the end of the match, our robot extends an arm which clamps onto the pipe, and retracts, lifting itself 180 degrees onto the pipe.
